The Medical Approach to Peace

War is a symptom. Broken institutions are the disease.

We study the state the way medicine studies the body: find the institution that is failing, trace the cause, and prescribe the law that heals it.

Case file

Patient: the state

Symptoms

  • War
  • Terrorism
  • Corruption
  • Poverty
  • Brain drain

Diagnosis

Dysfunctional institutions. The illness is authoritarianism.

Prescription

Just law, starting with a republican constitution.

The theory in brief

Peace is a matter of institutional health

1

The state is a body

Markets are its cells and institutions are its organs. Taxes feed it, and legitimacy is the air it breathes.

  • Market = cell
  • Institution = organ

2

Conflict is the disease

When an institution stops doing its job, the body falls ill. That illness is authoritarianism; war, terrorism and poverty are its symptoms.

  • Authoritarianism = disease
  • War = symptom

3

Law is the medicine

Good law prevents, cures, relieves or rehabilitates. A republican constitution is the vaccine; a treaty is only a painkiller.

  • Constitution = vaccine
  • Treaty = painkiller

What we do

A medical board for the body politic

We monitor, diagnose and certify the health of state institutions, and we teach citizens what healthy institutions look like.

Diagnose

We examine legislatures, executives and courts, and publish health reports that expose silent dysfunction before it erupts.

Certify

Like a board that licenses hospitals, we certify whether institutions are built to serve the public, and flag the ones that are not.

Flag toxic laws

Not every law is medicine. We trace laws that suppress dissent or protect impunity to their source, and recommend repeal or reform.

Educate

Through Gov Watch, we teach citizens and policymakers what peace and democracy actually require.

Government is not a trade which any man or body of men has a right to set up and exercise for his own emolument, but is altogether a trust, in right of those by whom that trust is delegated, and by whom it is always resumeable.

Founder

Ahsan Y. Chaudhary

A political and constitutional thinker, he began his career in Pakistan as a law lecturer and practitioner. The gap he saw there between political theory and how states actually behave followed him to graduate study in political science in the United States, and led him to the Medical Approach to Peace.
